What's "best", in most any category, is a matter of opinion/taste/personal experience. What is true for one person may not reflect another's reality. That said, below I'll be compiling and occasionally updating a list of "The Best ... on Oahu". These are not necessarily unique to Oahu; they're products and services available to residents of and visitors to Oahu.

The Best Brown Rice on Oahu:
--
Sukoyaka Genmai

Comments: This is the best-tasting brown rice around. Available at Marukai, Don Quijote and Palama Super Market. It is pricier if compared to generic white rice, but there is no comparison. For many of us, rice is a staple, a "necessity", and still more economical, pound for pound, than meats, fish, etc. It's occasionaly on special at Marukai and Don Quijote; it is also sometimes out of stock - perhaps demand temporarily outstrips supply at times. It is the only rice we buy anymore, whether on sale or not. If you favor brown rice for health reasons, then try it, you'll like it. (However, if you like brown rice for that nice, "woody" aroma and taste - you may not find Sukoyaka to your liking. ) Here's a photo.

The Best Canned "Tuna" on Oahu:
--
Van Camp's
Samoa Packing
Chunk Style
Wahoo

Comments: Wahoo isn't really tuna, of course. In Hawaii, it's more commonly known as "ono". Use it in place of canned tuna; "tuna" sandwich comes to mind, but whatever your preference... Available at Don Quijote, Sam's Club (just picked up an 8-pack today - 2009-01-31). I think Costco had them before, but didn't see any last time I went. Here's a photo.

The Best Chiropractor on Oahu:
--
Dr. David K. Suzuki
Chiropractor
1221 Kapiolani Blvd, Suite 245
Honolulu, HI 96814
(808) 591-8852

Comments: For a long time, I did not want to list him publicly - for selfish reasons. If too many others "discover" him, it may become difficult for me to schedule future appointments, because he's booked too far in advance. He's not like any other chiropractor I've known - take this as a strong, honest recommendation.

The Best Japanese-language TV Station on Oahu:
--
Nippon Golden Network (NGN)
567 S. King St, Suite 110
Honolulu, HI 96813
(808) 538-1966

Comments: You cannot (fairly) compare a "free" (commercial) station with this premium cable one. It's an "apples and oranges" sort of thing. I love the 15-minute drama serial "Dan Dan" (subtitled). And for those who like food-and-travel shows, there's the subtitled "Iitabi Yume Kibun". There's also 24 hours of classic, and modern, subtitled movies ... and much, much more...

The Best Rotisserie Chicken on Oahu:
--
Costco Wholesale
525 Alakawa St
Honolulu, HI 96817

Comments: What can I say? They're big, tasty, affordable... Did I forget to also mention that they're big and tasty?

The Best Take-out Pizza on Oahu:
--
Costco Wholesale
525 Alakawa St
Honolulu, HI 96817

Comments: Costco wins again. And you don't even have to be a member; the take-out windows are located outside the store. Cheese and combo are priced the same, so why not get the combo?

The Best Take-out Plate Lunches on Oahu:
--
Yuki's Place
1229 Keeaumoku St
Honolulu, HI
(808) 941-6097

Comments: They're located at the corner of Keeaumoku and Kinau Streets. I go there on average one or more times per week and take back to the office to eat.
Good, local-style place lunches, including daily offerings of beef stew, beef curry stew, hamburger steak w/ onions & gravy, chili w/ hot dog, etc.
There are rotating daily specials, like roast pork w/ gravy, spaghetti w/ garlic bread & toss salad, hamburger curry, etc.
Most items are $7.00 even, tax included. One or two items on the menu are $7.25.
This take-out window outlet is actually the kitchen for Yuki's Lunchwagon, near Queen's Medical Center, so those closer to that area can enjoy the same food.
