Last Sunday, we were in Kahuku, so naturally stopped at Giovanni's for lunch. I ordered the "Hot and Spicy"; my companions, Scampi. When we got there, not unexpectedly, a number of people were waiting for their orders. The wait, however, was unusually long, probably due to the Labor Day weekend I thought...

The people taking orders and serving didn't look familiar, but I was used to that. Over the years, I noticed different personnel (owners/employees?) "behind the counter", but the taste remained consistent. I did observe little operational differences...

After many minutes, our number was finally called and we finally sat down to eat.I don't know if it's just me, but my hot and spicy did not look the same, did not taste the same. There were specks of red (peppers?) I hadn't noticed before, but it was not as hot as I remembered; watered down, with more tartness. It was as if someone, who did not have the original recipe, didn't really know/enjoy the taste, tried to reconstruct it from scratch. Frankly, I was disappointed. My companions enjoyed their meal more than I did.

The name and location, and apparently the popularity, are the same as before.

Perhaps it's time to check out their lesser-known competitors...

>>Comments: Although the sign says their Shrimp Scampi is "the best", we always order their Hot and Spicy when in Kahuku (sometimes going out of our way to be in Kahuku). We like our hot food hot!

>>TheBus: From Ala Moana Shopping Center, take number 55 Kaneohe-Circle Isle. After passing the Polynesian Cultural Center, first look for a sign that says you're in "Kahuku", then watch on the right side of the road for a white, graffiti-covered truck and/or their sign which reads "Giovanni's Original White Shrimp Truck".
>>
>>Number 52 Wahiawa-Circle Isle also goes by there from the other direction, taking longer, but if you're planning to "circle the isle" by bus anyway, either way may do.
