Yesterday happened to be Mother's Day, but that's not why we decided to order take out…

Duck Lee specializes in roast items, including roast duck, pei pa duck, char siu, roast pork and spare ribs. You can also order combination plates at the counter.

A (dated) menu is available online here. (As I write this, the prices listed are not current, but you can get an idea of the selection.)

Our favorite is their whole roast duck. Although there are numerous establishments on Oahu offering this, theirs is special, in our opinion.

I entered just after another man, who decided to "plant" himself standing just inside the closed doorway, even though there was ample room near the counter. I was placed in the awkward position of not wanting to appear to be cutting in line, but trying to keep clear of both exiting and entering customers. He seemed oblivious to all this.

When my turn came and the gentleman at the counter took my order, he said there would be a "couple minutes" wait. There was only one (other) person doing the chopping, and he was busy working on previous orders. The pace seems to proceed more leisurely than at, say, Honolulu's Chinatown. He appeared to be in no hurry, but it was worth the wait.

The duck was carefully cut and chopped, and placed in a styrofoam plate with two containers of sauce. I hurried home…

The skin appears charred, but that adds to the flavor and texture - I recommend it be eaten while still hot (not reheated). Try it without the included sauce first, that is the test of its inherent flavor…
