I ran into an interesting problem recently. My primary Internet connection was unavailable, so I had to use an alternate system. When I went online to try to install my antivirus software there, I found that certain sites were inaccessible.

In particular, I could not connect to the site for the antivirus software I had been using, so tried another popular antivirus software site. I was unsuccessful there also.

I tried tucows.com, a software download site and it, too, was inaccessible.

My preferred browser is FireFox, but Internet Explorer didn't work either.

None of these were secure web pages.

Speaking of secure pages, I had no problem connecting to my online banking sites, nor to other sites with which I regularly did business.

Windows Update appeared to work - but too quickly. The confirmation message said the update was successful, but nothing changed, so there was a potentially endless cycle of "updates" which changed nothing.

I searched the web for a similar problem, but nothing seemed to match.

I went through Windows' Internet Explorer Troubleshooter ("I receive a 'The page cannot be displayed' message. Or, I have some other problem that keeps me from viewing Web pages"), but turned up a blank.

I had recently switched ISP's so, wondering if this might be the problem, posted a message to their "Users Helping Users" forum. No one replied.

I tried running an already installed version of Spybot - Search & Destroy, a freeware spyware detection and removal program, but it generated an error message and aborted prematurely.

I uninstalled Spybot-S&D and installed the most recent version. After running the program to check, then fix all problems, I was finally able to access the previously inaccessible sites!

It was a learning experience and, as I said, interesting, but frustrating and time-consuming as well. I thought I would share this on the chance that someone else might benefit…
